At dawn, mana whenua in Wellington placed Te Kahu o te Raukura - a cloak of peace, on the protest in the capital to help police come to a resolution.
Taranaki Whānui and Ngāti Toa Rangatira have repeatedly asked for protesters to respect the whenua and have been appalled by some of the behaviour of protesters.
Last week mana whenua hosted police and Māori Wardens at nearby Pipitea Marae, but protesters entered in the back door serving police with a bogus trespass notice.
Taranaki Whānui - who come from a line of peaceful resisters - say it needed to be done to lay down a clear path ahead.
Māori News Director Māni Dunlop spoke to Susie Ferguson from Pipitea Marae.
