Covid-19: Nearly 30 million locked down in China

From Morning Report, 7:41 am on 16 March 2022

Nearly 30 million people are under lockdown across China as surging Covid-19 cases spark restrictions not seen since the start of the pandemic.

China reported more than 5000 new cases in its latest update on Tuesday, more than double the previous day's tally, as the highly-transmissible Omicron variant spreads across a country which has clung tightly to a 'zero-Covid' strategy.

All 24 million residents of the northern province of Jilin are under quarantine orders.

Beijing correspondent Patrick Fok told Corin Dann it's the first time an entire province has undergone a lockdown since Wuhan in early 2020.
