The Metservice has issued a Severe Thunderstorms Warning for the areas of Kaipara, Far North, Whangaeri and Rodney, with risks of localised tornadoes and flash floods.
The National Emergency Management Agency is urging people to take shelter inside, away from windows as the weather hits this morning.
