There are weeks of cleanup ahead for some homes in Auckland and Northland after the violent storm which hit the region.
A fast and furious downpour hit the upper part of the country overnight Sunday and then landed in Auckland, at its heaviest around between 8 and 10 yesterday morning.
Torrential rain is classified as above 40 millimetres an hour, Metservice says this was 60 or even 70 mls an hour at times.
