Asylum seeker on NZ taking Australian refugees

From Morning Report, 6:14 am on 25 March 2022

An extraordinary backdown by the Australian government will allow hundreds of refugees to resettle in New Zealand.

But the near-decade delay means the breakthrough brings little comfort to those who've languished in off-shore detention centres.

Hossein Latifi has spent almost nine years in Australian detention since he fled Iran as a 24-year-old and still has no idea when he will be allowed to leave.

He was first held on Christmas Island for ten months and then spent five years on Nauru before being transferred to Victoria because of his mental health.

He has applied to go to the United States but has heard nothing and now wants to come to New Zealand.

Deputy political editor Craig McCulloch asked him what indefinite detention is like.
