The Gisborne District Council is calling on the Government to cover the millions of dollars needed to repair roads damaged by severe flooding in the region last month.
There are still more than 1500 faults on Tairawhiti roads and it could take up to two years to fix them all.
Council chief executive Nedine Thatcher Swann spoke to Susie Ferguson.
