Rotorua Māori seats legislation has 'serious issues' - Robertson

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 26 April 2022

The Deputy Prime Minister says proposed legislation to introduce Māori seats on the Rotorua council has serious issues.

A report by the Attorney General David Parker found the local bill limits the right to be free from discrimination and cannot be justified.

Grant Robertson told Morning Report ministers will consider the report.

"It's got significant issues that I think would make it difficult to support."

Robertson says the bill passed its first reading because it was what the local council wanted.
