Michael Wood taking request for inquiry into port safety seriously

From Morning Report, 7:17 am on 26 April 2022

Transport Minister Michael Wood says he's taking a request for an inquiry into port safety very seriously, after the second death of a port worker in a week.

A Lyttelton Port Company worker died yesterday on a ship, six days after a death at the Ports of Auckland.

Three separate investigations are underway into the accident - by the Police, Maritime New Zealand, and the Lyttelton Port Company, which has declined to be interviewed on Morning Report.

Unions had already asked for an inquiry into port safety, before the death in Lyttelton.

Wood, who is also Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety, told Morning Report he's sought further advice, and wants to know that it won't just be an inquiry for inquiry's sake.

"That if we go down that track that it's adding something to our understanding, and actually pointing us in the right direction."
