Schools are hoping that thousands of absent children will return to class this month.
They say one in five students was absent last term and many stayed away due to fear of Covid-19, fear of vaccinations and a rise in home-schooling.
Some schools have lost so many students they face staffing and funding cuts and in Northland principals have asked the Ministry to guarantee their resourcing for next year.
