"He was my living superhero". That's how the niece of Joe Hawke has described the prominent kaumatua, who has died, aged 82.
Born in Tāmaki Makaurau in 1940, Joseph Parata Hohepa Hawke of Ngāti Whātua ki Ōrākei, played a leading role in the occupation of Auckland's Bastion Point in the late 1970s.
His niece, Precious Clark, spoke to our reporter Amy Williams.
