Prominent kaumatua, activist and leader of the long-running Takaparawhau occupation - Auckland's Bastion Point in the late 1970s, Joe Hawke, has died, aged 82.
Born in Tāmaki Makaurau in 1940, Joseph Parata Hohepa Hawke of Ngāti Whātua ki Ōrākei, led his people in their bid to reclaim their land.
He later became a Member of Parliament.
