Prime Minister gears up for big week in the US

From Morning Report, 7:16 am on 30 May 2022

The Prime Minister is gearing up for a massive week in the United States - capping off her jam-packed programme with the most-coveted of invites - a White House visit on Wednesday.

But her delegation has been hit by Covid-19, with Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade head Chris Seed testing positive overnight.

Seed will have to stay in San Fransisco and isolate for at least five days, with New Zealand's ambassador to the US Rosemary Banks likely to step in for him.

A member of the broader delegation tested positive a few days ago. Jacinda Ardern spent the weekend in San Francisco and Seattle - meeting tech bosses and California's governor Gavin Newsom, who also announced he had Covid-19 the day after holding an outdoors event with the Prime Minister.

Political editor Jane Patterson is in the US and filed this report.
