The Prime Minister says an accident which killed seven people over the weekend is "horrific", but work is being done to bring the road toll down.
The seven, including a baby, were killed when the van they were in collided with a truck on State Highway 1 near Picton.
Jacinda Ardern told Morning Report she can't speak about the latest accident.
But she says generally, the Government is spending $2.9 billion on road safety measures over the next three years.
Covid-19 traffic light settings as hospitals fall under pressure
Ardern defended the current traffic light settings for Covid-19.
She said hospitals are also managing illnesses that aren't just Covid-19, and the current settings in place are appropriate.
"When you think about back when we changed the orange setting, then we were looking at a rolling average of roughly 10,000 cases, we had over 500 hospitalisations, close to 30 in ICU and you look at that now, our rolling average now is under 5000 cases, we've got around... about 350 in hospital and five in ICU."
Ardern said mask use should continue as it also helps protect against flu.
