The storm in Wellington tore down trees and pulled down slips, while a catamaran was destroyed after blowing into the rocks, and onto the road, in Eastbourne.
Local ferries were also cancelled, leaving a family stuck on Matiu/Somes Island, in the middle of the Wellington Harbour.
They've been hunkering down overnight.
