Floods and heavy rain have battered the Waitaki District, with more than 20 roads still closed due to flooding.
The council has advised schools those roads would not reopen in time for the school run today.
The Kakanui was among the rivers which continued to swell overnight, and residents have been advised to prepare for more flooding.
Waitaki Council road manager Mike Harrison spoke to Susie Ferguson.
