Smokefree legislation getting closer

From Morning Report, 8:43 am on 27 July 2022

The government's goal for Aotearoa to be smokefree by 2025 negotiated its first hurdle in Parliament last night.

The Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Amendment Bill - which passed its first reading - outlines three key changes.

It will cut the number of retail outlets able to sell tobacco, reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in smoked tobacco products, and ensure tobacco can't be sold to anyone born in 2009 or later.

University of Melbourne Professor Tony Blakely was commissioned by the government to lead "tobacco endgame" modelling in collaboration with colleagues at a Melbourne-based health intervention group and at the University of Otago.

He spoke to Susie Ferguson.
