The company that runs the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter has announced it will begin talks with power companies that would see it stay open beyond 2024.
Southland Chamber of Commerce president Neil McAra says it's an encouraging development but it's important the region's economy doesn't rely too heavily on the 50-year-old smelter near Bluff.
