From Morning Report, 6:50 am on 18 August 2022

A fire at a scrap steel yard in Christchurch has sent smoke billowing across the city, with explosions at the site continuing through the night.

The scrap yard is in the Garlands Road area of Woolston.

Fire and Emergency says it was called to reports of cars on fire at about eight o'clock last night.

In an update from 11.45pm on Wednesday, Fire and Emergency says 15 firetrucks and more than 50 firefighters were called to battle a blaze in Christchurch.

A public health warning was issued last night with people affected by the smoke told to close their windows and doors and not go outside.

A nearby dog rescue centre was also evacuated.
