World remembers Mikhail Gorbachev

From Morning Report, 8:40 am on 1 September 2022

The last leader of the Soviet Union is being remembered from two vastly different views: with love from abroad, but loathing at home.

Mikhail Gorbachev, known for his pivotal role in ending the Cold War peacefully, died at the age of 91.

He came into power in 1985 and was recognised for opening up the USSR and for his rapprochement with the West, but he was unable to prevent the collapse of his country.

His death has been met with mixed feelings from people on the streets.

Oxford University Emeritus professor of politics Archie Brown has written numerous books on Gorbachev.

He spoke to Susie Ferguson.
