Significant change needed on safety in construction - WorkSafe CEO

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 2 September 2022

WorkSafe has admitted the mahi it's been doing to prevent construction workers from being killed and injured on the job has not been enough.

The health and safety watchdog is now appealing for companies to do better.

Since January last year, at least two construction workers have died every month and one person a day is being seriously injured.

Five men are still being treated at the burns unit at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital after being injured in an explosion a week ago.

Earlier this week a man died after an accident on a worksite in Mt Eden.

WorkSafe chief executive Phil Parkes told Susie Ferguson they are fed up of prosecuting people and not seeing change.
