A mathematics professor isn't surprised that large numbers of year 10 students have failed NCEA numeracy tests in a trial run.
Schools have told RNZ of pass rates as low as zero for the writing assessment and below 50 percent for numeracy - in the tests which will become compulsory in 2024.
Massey University distinguished professor of mathematics Gaven Martin last year chaired an independent panel which recommended an overhaul of how the subject is taught in New Zealand.
