Queen's public holiday clashes with South Canterbury anniversary

Queen Elizabeth visited New Zealand ten times during her reign, the first of which was during the Christmas and New Years period of 1953 and 1954.

During that tour it's said three out of four New Zealanders turned out to see the her and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.

One place she visited was the South Canterbury city of Timaru, where she rested and had lunch at The Grosvenor Hotel, eating locally caught mountain trout, and strawberries from Temuka.

The passing of Queen Elizabeth is being honoured on the 26th of September, with a public holiday. But the nationwide memorial day clashes with South Canterbury Anniversary Day.

Timaru councillor Stu Piddington spoke to Susie Ferguson.
