A measure aimed at protecting little blue penguins on Wellington's Miramar Peninsula may be forcing them onto a dangerous road as they seek out nesting spots around the construction site of a $500 million development.
Wellington City Council sold the land with the caveat that its developer would be responsible for rehousing the penguins.
But while a fence prevents the penguins from entering the dangerous construction site, it also acts as a barrier to the penguins' regular nesting sites.
Guyon Espiner spoke to Dan Henry, founder of Predator Free Miramar.
