A strong 5.8 earthquake rattled the top of the South Island, and lower North Island last night.
The quake was centred about thirty kilometres north-east of French Pass, about 50 kilometres deep and was felt by about 45,000 people across New Zealand.
Residents at the top of the South Island are worried the earthquake might cause more landslides.
