Liz Truss calls it quits 45 days into role

From Morning Report, 6:15 am on 21 October 2022

After clinging on for days, the UK's Prime Minister has called it quits. Liz Truss is the shortest standing Prime Minister in UK history, serving for 45 days.

On Monday new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt reversed almost all of the tax cutting proposals laid out by Ms Truss last month.

The economic U-turns taken by the Conservative government led to strong criticism of the Prime Minister by the Opposition.

But Truss has also been battling discontent and a lack of confidence from her own party.

She broke the news of her resignation in a brief speech outside Downing Street.
