Dairy farmers are pleased the government has stood up against Canada on its Dairy tarriffs under the CPTPP.
New Zealand believes Canada is implementing its dairy tariff rate quotas inconsistently and is not giving exporters here enough access to its market.
New Zealand initiated the dispute in May by requesting formal consultations with Canada but they didn't resolve the problem so now the government has requested the establishment of a panel to hear and decide the dispute.
The president of Federated Farmers Andrew Hoggard says he's pleased the government has escalated the dispute.
