There have been multiple earthquakes felt near Taupō overnight, the largest a magnitude 5.6 quake just before midnight.
That quake struck 15 kilometres south-west of Taupō, at a depth of five kilometres.
Thousands of people reported feeling the quake on GeoNet.
A swarm of lighter earthquakes followed into the early hours of the morning.
