Hapū upset as govt pushes ahead with treaty settlement

From Morning Report, 7:55 am on 13 December 2022

The government is pushing ahead with a treaty settlement one hapū says will strip it of its right to justice.

The Supreme Court last week found in favour of an earlier Waitangi Tribunal ruling that land in Waikato should be returned to Wairarapa Moana, despite them not being mana whenua.

But a settlement for the wider Ngāti Kahunugunu ki Wairarapa Tāmaki Nui-a-Rua iwi, which is due to have its third reading today, will extinguish Wairarapa Moana's challenges to the Tribunal.

Wairarapa Moana Incorporated chair Kingi Smiler says the move is similar to the Foreshore and Seabed, legislating away its right to justice.
