Māori health advocates support smokefree plan

From Morning Report, 8:24 am on 15 December 2022

Māori health advocates say new smokefree legislation is the best way to reduce smoking and the harm it causes.

The new laws include bans on selling tobacco to anyone born on or after January the 1st, 2009.

The legislation will also reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in smoked tobacco products and cut the number of retailers able to sell tobacco by 90 percent.

But National says the approach is wrong.

Deputy Leader Nicola Willis told Morning Report yesterday that before all else, the focus should have been on reducing nicotine levels in cigarettes.

Tupeka Kore spokesperson Andrew Waa spoke to Kim Hill.
