Government agencies are admitting failure in their attempts to make roads safer.
The road toll has soared this year and targets set under the nationwide Road to Zero plan - which is supposed to see an incremental reduction in road deaths - have been deemed unrealistic.
Green Party transport spokesperson Julie Anne Genter - who was the Government's associate minister of transport when the Road to Zero strategy was launched three years ago - spoke to Charlotte Cook.
