MediaWorks to lay off up to 90 staff

From Morning Report, 7:46 am on 25 January 2023

New Zealand-based company MediaWorks intends to lay off up to 90 staff in an attempt to cut costs, according to an internal email from chief executive Cam Wallace.

In the email Wallace said two-thirds of the company's costs were labour related, and the impact of inflationary pressures plus a likely recession this year meant costs had be reduced.

In a statement to RNZ, a spokesperson said MediaWorks staff had been given "an update on a period of business change we are about to embark on".

"We have unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to review our operating model and reduce our workforce by up to 90 roles [this includes a significant number of vacant roles]."

So what might this mean for the country's media scene?

Producer and presenter of RNZ's MediaWatch Colin Peacock spoke to Corin Dann.
