East Coast residents still struggle to contact friends, family

From Morning Report, 6:16 am on 17 February 2023

People in cyclone hit areas on the East Coast are still struggling to get in touch with family and friends.

This Gisborne woman says the hardest thing about the storm has been not being able to contact her mother in Napier.

Both areas have been severely impacted by flooding and high winds, which have caused swathes of power and phone network outages.

The woman says she hasn't heard from her mother since the storm began and doesn't know how she's coping.

She's been walking around Gisborne desperate to find a Wi-Fi signal.

The lack of internet and phone connection has been a huge problem since the storm began.

On the night of the flooding, this woman's nana needed an ambulance to Gisborne Hospital - but the bridge to Waiti, where she lives, was flooded out.
