'Freight train of wood' wipes out newly-planted trees in Tai Rāwhiti

From Morning Report, 8:16 am on 24 February 2023

A tree-planting group in Tai Rāwhiti has waited years for action on forestry slash - and that wish was finally granted yesterday.

The government has announced a ministerial inquiry into forestry practices, after woody debris wiped out vast swathes of land during Cyclone Gabrielle.

Over the past few years, volunteers had planted more than 60,000 native trees along the Waimatā River, north of Gisborne.

Most of those trees survived previous floods - but not this time.

Waimata Catchment Restoration Project's manager Laura Watson spoke to Corin Dann.
