The country's first openly transgender Mayor and MP Georgina Beyer is being remembered as a fearless fighter for rainbow rights whose love and compassion will live on forever.
She died yesterday at Mary Potter Hospice after a long illness. She was 65.
Her election as Mayor of Carterton in 1995 and then later as an MP, attracted worldwide attention.
The Carterton District Council is flying its flag at half mast today in honour of its former mayor.
