Sri Lanka have fought back from their test and one-day series loss to the Black Caps by taking the opening T20 international at Eden Park.
The match tie was decided in a super over, which saw Sri Lanka hit 11 runs in three balls after New Zealand set a target of nine.
Earlier, Sri Lanka scored an imposing 196 for 5, which New Zealand matched on the last ball of the 20th over.
