Gisborne appears to have escaped any serious damage from the wild holiday-weekend weather - but the region remains in a precarious state in the wake of cyclone Gabrielle.
According to Gisborne mayor, Rehette Stoltz, roading and water remain the most critical issues.
Even this weekend's relatively light weather hit exposed again the problem of slash damage.
