Weather calm before Kapiti tornado hit - witness

From Morning Report, 8:08 am on 11 April 2023

Fire and Emergency New Zealand has described the damage done by a tornado in Paraparaumu, north of Wellington, before dawn this morning.

Assistant Commander of the Wellington fire Brigade, Stephen Hudson, gave us an update a short time ago.

Paraparaumu resident Sam told Charlotte Cook he woke up to complete stillness before the tornado it hit.

Sam says power came back to his Kapiti property quite quickly but RNZ understands there are still 160 homes without power.
