Insurance assessors are due in Nelson's Upper Moutere valley today following yesterday's tornado there , which tore up roads, lifted roofs, blew out windows, brought down trees and flung debris far and wide.
The tornado was part of a thunderstorm system which also brought high winds and rain to the region.
However, MetService says the weather in the region has calmed down with around 10 millimetres of rain falling overnight.
Kenny Cripps, who lives in Upper Moutere, first learned of the tornado via a panicked phone call from his wife, who was at home when it struck.
He spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
