Ceasefire in Sudan, UN prepares for mass exodus

From Morning Report, 6:13 am on 26 April 2023

A ceasefire began in Sudan yesterday morning after a three-day truce was brokered by the US and Saudi Arabia.

Residents have reported sporadic gunfire, but both the Sudanese Army and the Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces appear to be observing the truce.

The UN says it's prepared for more than a quarter of a million people to flee into Chad and South Sudan.

Violence broke out, primarily in the capital Khartoum, between rival military factions battling for control of Africa's third largest country last week.

At least 459 people have died in the conflict so far, though the actual number is thought to be much higher.
