Invercargill's mayor Nobby Clark has been lambasted by local iwi over his attitude towards giving civic buildings a Māori as well as an English name.
At a fiery meeting yesterday he put forward a motion saying the council would support bilingual naming but only if the Māori words relate to a building's purpose.
Using metaphors or words that have a symbolic meaning should not be allowed because they cause confusion.
Tess Brunton reports his proposal was shot down as divisive and unreasonable.
