A Hawke's Bay primary school that is teaching pupils in the school hall and temporary classes has now had its funding cut for a multimillion dollar rebuild.
The Chair of Eskdale school, Dr Glenn Bond, says they're in the dark about why the project was canned and what the future holds.
Nearly three million dollars has already been spent on designs, foundations, and a retaining wall leaving nearly a third of the school as a fenced off construction zone.
Dr Bond says the project had been a beacon of hope for staff and students who have weathered the uncertainty of Cyclone Gabrielle.
Dr Bond spoke to Charlotte Cook.
