People whose homes were damaged by the Auckland floods and Cyclone Gabrielle say the latest initiative to help them pay rent is a lifeline.
Many of those whose homes were red or yellow-stickered are still having to pay rates and a mortgage, plus the cost of rent.
From early September, the government will provide a weekly payment towards accommodation.
But some residents are still tied to unreliable payments from their insurance company and want the government to make the companies more accountable.
