Electricity companies accused of creating extra hardship

From Morning Report, 8:28 am on 2 August 2023

Electricity companies are being accused of piling hardship on top of hardship by charging customers who can't afford their bills extra fees when they cut off their power.

Advocacy group Common Grace Aotearoa found power companies were charging clients up to $275 in fees to disconnect their electricity supply.

Despite guidelines recommending the companies be transparent, none of the energy retailers were able to give a breakdown of their costs.
