A bilingual work has taken out the top prize at the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.

Te Wehenga: The Separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku by Mat Tait was last night presented with the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year Award, the country's highest in children's literature, at a ceremony held at Wellington's Pipitea Marae.

The judges lauded the work's "highly innovative" approach to the telling of local myth and integrating both Maori and English into the illustrations. It was among one hundred and fifty entries considered this year.

Convenor Nicola Daly spoke to Corin Dann.
