Hutt City Council has voted unanimously to support a call from mana whenua to change the name of the suburb Petone back to Pito-one.
The area's traditional name was misspelled after colonial settlement in the region during the 19th century.
Any application for an official name change must be approved by the Geographic Board.
Liz Mellish is chair of the Palmerston North Māori Reserves Trust, which has lobbied for the change, alongside the Wellington Tenths Trust.
Mellish spoke to Corin Dann.
