Wairoa's Mayor says the crackdown on gangs will add to workload pressures for officers in small towns.
This week the government announced legislation will be introduced that bans gang patches in public and introduces extra powers to stop gang members congregating.
The Police Association says getting staff to sign up to work in small town New Zealand is already a challenge.
