Pope to step down at end of February due to 'advanced age'

Pope Benedict has announced his resignation effective at the end of February. As pontiff he insisted on moral absolutes, especially regarding contraception and the sanctity of life -- but faced harsh criticism for his handling of the child sex abuse scandal which engulfed the Catholic church.
