Music 101 for Saturday 3 March 2012
2-3pm
Access All Areas: The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975
Seattle-based author Pat Thomas, author of the book Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975. The publication features a soundtrack of long unavailable material, released by Seattle label Light in the Attic. Thomas touches on the politics surrounding the Black Panthers, with special focus on the speeches, interviews, and music by noted activists Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, Elaine Brown. He also delves in the near forgotten history of Motown's spoken word label, Black Forum. For Access All Areas Trevor Reekie talks to Pat Thomas about Black Power, the Panthers and how pop culture embraced a movement at the forefront of one of America's most tumultuous decades.
Tubular Bells for Two
Australian musicians Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts have arranged Mike Oldfield's classic 1973 album for just two people, making for a precariously athletic performance at the NZ International Arts Festival 2012 this week. Hear reviews from the International Arts Festival here.
Dirty Three
Violinist Warren Ellis talks to us ahead of the band's NZ show and a new album Toward The Slow Sun.
3-4pm
The Sampler: Sharon Van Etten
Nick Bollinger reviews Tramp, the new album from New Jersey singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten, which sees her collaborating with Aaron Dessner from The National.
Colin Stetson
U.S. Saxophonist Colin Stetson (pictured right, with 103 year old bass sax) visited New Zealand this week as part of Bon Iver's nine-piece band, but this sax-wielding virtuoso is an innovative artist in his own right... Stetson has played with an extensive list of indie bands and musicians including Tom Waits, TV On The Radio, and Arcade Fire, and Stetson's 2011 solo album New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges was an exploration of the apocalyptic sounds of the bass saxophone, recorded almost entirely live, without loops or overdubs. We meet Colin Stetson to talk about this physically exhausting instrument....
Robert Glasper
As well as recording a series of acoustic jazz albums for Blue Note, the now New York-based Texan jazz musician Robert Glasper has also laid down piano on recordings by Kanye West, Q-Tip, J Dilla, Jay Z and Common, among others. His new solo record Black Radio betrays his jazz roots and features Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def and Erykah Badu.

Four Titans - Part One: Trevor Horn and Bootsy Collins
Each year some of music history's most influential names share their stories with a hand-picked group of the next generation of beat makers, musicians and soon-to-be vocal household names at the Red Bull Music Academy.
Trevor Horn is one of the biggest names in UK Pop music production, being the mastermind behind hits from Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, ABC, Malcolm McLaren and with his own group the Art Of Noise. Horn embraced the new sounds of synthesis at the turn of the 70s and rode them all the way to the top of the charts. Also in the first episode of Four Titans is bass-player Bootsy Collins. From his work with James Brown as part of the JB's to being part of George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic, he is easily one of the funkiest guys on the planet.

Since the arrest and deportation of a notorious Jamaican drug lord, the music scene has been disrupted.
Death Cab For Cutie
Washington State band Death Cab For Cutie have seven albums and five EPs under their belt, so there was a good range of songs to showcase on the first visit to New Zealand for the International Arts Festival 2012. We hang out at soundcheck with guitarist and producer Chris Walla and singer Benjamin Gibbard.
