UB40’s Robin and Duncan Campbell
Starting out as eight working class kids from Birmingham, England, UB40 became a massive selling band with a devoted following down under. However in 2008 frontman Ali Campbell left the band acrimoniously, while his brothers Duncan and Robin continued under the original name. Ahead of UB40’s Raggamuffin 2016 performance as part of UB40 Mk II, Trevor Reekie talks to the brothers Campbell about the litigation that now threatens their family relationship.

Sleater-Kinney
Olympia, Washington rock outfit Sleater-Kinney return to New Zealand in the New Year, performing their first show here in 10 years – and the first since the trio announced a hiatus in 2006. Ahead of the visit, Emma Smith talks with singer and guitarist Corin Tucker about their break-up, make-up, and the band’s riot grrrl beginnings.

Yelawolf
Gadsen, Alabama-born rapper Yelawolf has deep family roots in the American South, and he wears his Southern heritage on his sleeve, even figuratively flying the Confederate flag despite its association with the Southern states’ history of slavery and racism. In New Zealand to bring his country-infused hip hop to local audiences for the first time, he talks to Sam Wicks about reclaiming his redneck roots.

If Afrofuturism is where science fiction and technology meets popular culture of the African diaspora, could it be happening in Aotearoa too?  In part one of Aotearoa Futurism, Sophie Wilson and Dan Taipua put this question to hip hop artist Che Fu, psychedelic rock guitarist and peace ambassador, Billy TK Sr, and his son, vocalist and guitarist Mara TK of Electric Wire Hustle, to find out whether they identify as Space Maori.

Amiria Grenell
Music is strictly a family affair for Christchurch’s Amiria Grenell. The folk singer songwriter and daughter of local country music singer, John Grenell, enlisted the help of her musical brothers during the recording of her latest album, Autumn. Yadana Saw speaks to Amiria about being onstage with all her family, including her daughter, Sienna, who joins her mum during a live session for Music 101.
