Music 101 for Saturday 2 February 2019
1:05 Brooding on the future
Broods have released a new album! Don't Feed The Pop Monster is an upbeat yet angry record that fiercely proclaims the sibling's independence and desire to be allowed to be themselves as musicians and people. Caleb and Georgia Nott take a moment to join Yadana Saw to talk about pride, new directions and how freeing it can be to get dumped.
1:30 Song Crush
This week host Kirsten Johnstone is joined by RNZ music producers Tony Stamp and Jana Whitta, and Radio Active's Breakfast host Maggie Tweedie.
2:05 Beirut
From one band that spans the world musically to another now- Zach Condon started his musical project Beirut when he was still in his teens, giving it that name in tribute to “a place where cultures collide”.
His music has always been a similar collision, and new album Gallipoli is no different, in fact it was recorded in three different countries.
Tony Stamp talked to Zach about the new album, as well as ghost peppers, being diagnosed with exhaustion, and why he’s glad to have left America.
2:20 Introducing - Blu Fish
2:40 Pickle your darlings
Christchurch lo-fi pop muso Pickle Darling (real name Lukas Mayo) released his debut album Bigness at the start of January via indie label Z Tapes. It became the top selling album in the Pop category on Bandcamp, who also featured it as their Album of the Day. It went on to debut at #9 in the local album charts.
Fanboy Tony Stamp sat down with Lukas recently for a yarn about the album. It lasted an hour. Here are some extracts!
3:10 A room full of 78's
Now we’re talking to a man who has not taken the Marie Kondo method of clearing out your house seriously at all! Trevor Reekie has tracked down obsessive 78 inch record collector Christopher King and twisted his arm to share with us some of his most prized records and the stories behind them.
3:30 Laneway profile: Masego
It was Laneway last weekend and artists from all over the world made their way across the Tasman to play up a storm. One such artist is genre-defying American singer & multi-instrumentalist Masego, whose live track Tadow is currently sitting on over 100 million views on Youtube.
Tony Stamp sat down with Masego for a chat prior to his Laneway set.
